Naypyidaw, April 27 – In a bid to secure geographical indication protection for Myanmar’s famous Paw San aromatic rice, a discussion was held on April 27, 2023, at 2 PM. The event, hosted virtually at the Ministry of Commerce’s Intellectual Property Department Meeting Hall (Building No. 52) in Naypyidaw, was attended by various officials and stakeholders. The meeting gathered 85 participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Department of Agriculture, Myanmar Rice Federation, and other relevant associations.
The Director General of the Intellectual Property Department opened the discussion, emphasizing the importance of geographical indication (GI) protection for Paw San rice, which plays a vital role in elevating the value of Myanmar’s domestic products. She noted that Myanmar’s Trademark Law, enacted in 2019, came into full effect on April 1, 2023. A grand opening to officially begin accepting trademark applications took place on April 26, 2023, coinciding with World Intellectual Property Day.
The Director General highlighted that the protection of GI for Paw San rice is essential for safeguarding the product’s unique qualities, adding that GI protection could significantly enhance Myanmar’s agricultural economy. She further mentioned that preparations are being made in collaboration with international organizations to register Shwebo Paw San rice as the first GI product from Myanmar.
During the discussion, attendees exchanged insights on how to achieve GI protection for Paw San rice. Representatives from the Shwebo Paw San Farmers Association shared their experiences, offering valuable advice to participants. The event concluded with a Q&A session and closing remarks from the Director General, who reiterated the importance of securing GI status to protect and promote Myanmar’s iconic rice on the global stage.
