On September 18, 2024, a workshop on “Trademark Law” was held at the Arindama Hall, Office No. (8) of the Myanmar Police Force Headquarters, under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The event was attended by senior officials from the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) under the Ministry of Commerce, including the Director of the Copyright Division and the Director of the Trademark Division. Approximately 70 participants, including police officers from the Myanmar Police Force, took part in the session.
The workshop aimed to enhance understanding among law enforcement officers on the crimes related to trademark violations, as stipulated by the Trademark Law, which fall under the jurisdiction of the police. The session provided guidance on how officers can handle cases involving trademark infringements, registration procedures, and the existing regulations, should such crimes be reported to police stations.
The opening speech was delivered by Deputy Police Chief Police Brigadier General Aung Naing Thu, representing the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Myanmar Police Force.
Following the opening, Dr. Seint Thandar Tun, Director of the Trademark Division at the IPD, presented in detail the provisions of the Trademark Law, registration procedures, and the penalties for violations. She also explained the rights and benefits of registering trademarks, as well as the ongoing trademark disputes. The participating officers were given the opportunity to ask questions, and detailed responses were provided to clarify any uncertainties.
This workshop signifies a step towards bolstering the enforcement of intellectual property rights in Myanmar, emphasizing the role of law enforcement in protecting trademarks and preventing violations.
