On July 31, 2024, a virtual coordination meeting was held at the Ministry of Commerce to discuss the Draft Law on Geographical Indication Registration and related application forms. The meeting, attended by officials from various ministries and organizations, aimed to finalize and amend the draft law and forms.
In his opening remarks, the Deputy Minister emphasized the significance of geographical indication protection in enhancing the quality of local products and facilitating their entry into international markets. This initiative aligns with the State Administration Council’s economic goals. The Deputy Minister also noted that the Intellectual Property Department started drafting the regulations in 2021, and feedback has since been collected from relevant entities.
Dr. Moe Moe Thwe, Director General of the Intellectual Property Department, presented updates on the draft law and application forms. Participants provided feedback and discussed necessary amendments.
Once implemented, the Geographical Indication Registration Law will offer opportunities for Myanmar’s geographical products, such as Shwebo Pawsan rice, Ywangan coffee, and Kyaukse Seintalone mangoes, to access international markets with increased value and improved quality.
