Myanmar Intellectual Property Department (IPD): A Guide for Trademark Applicants
The Myanmar Intellectual Property Department (IPD), also referred to in enquiries as MIPD, is the government department concerned with intellectual property administration under the Ministry of Commerce. For trademark applicants and their overseas advisers, it is useful to understand the difference between the Department’s role and the work of a local representative.
The IPD and trademark applications
Trademark application administration involves the Department’s filing and examination processes, communications to applicants and publication of relevant records. A local representative helps prepare the client’s documents, submit matters on instructions and communicate the subsequent steps.
Understanding journal documents
Trademark journals can contain different kinds of documents: publication of applications, registration information and grant or refusal announcements. These should be identified by their document heading and the relevant journal number and date; they are not interchangeable records.
Our Trademark Journals directory groups the available documents under Publication, Registration and Grant & Refusal. Multiple files are presented as individual parts.
Published records and search coverage
For our present trademark searches, we use records under the new system that have already been published by the IPD. The available search results do not include applications that have not yet been published. See our guide to search scope and limitations before relying on a report for a filing decision.
Working through a local representative
International firms and corporate teams should keep the application reference, applicant details and the approved version of the mark together. When forwarding an IPD notice, send the complete document and earlier correspondence rather than an isolated extract. This allows the local team to review the actual request and explain the instructions needed.
